Editing

So very sadly and also unfortunately the computers were down and not working the past two days we were suppose to edit.  Our computers are from 2008 they have a lot of problems.  We have been asking the administration to get us new computers and equipment but they are so cheap.  All of the computers are crusty and very slow and it makes it extremely hard to get work done in class.  Also the computers cannot connect to Wi-Fi all of the time so we can’t access Internet during class either.  Since this happens it makes working in class and getting our commercial done extremely hard and a lot more difficult.  So the Pinnacle studios wasn’t allowing us to edit and it was making it hard to even save our clips that we were trying to work on.  The computer is also didn’t allow us to save any of our clips or work that we had done so the second day we had to restart all over again which happened again today.  Our teacher told us to put everything in the Google drive and we will get laptops next week so hopefully we can start working on editing our commercials.  This entire process has been very frustrating and aggravating because we were going on such a good role and had a ton of momentum and then it all just got shut down.  As a student I wish there was more I could do to try and get this solved and get new computers and the stops put in the class but I don’t have that type of money and neither does the school. Me and some of my other classmates have sat down and discussed ways that we can raise money for the program.  I am thinking of doing a fundraiser to build money in support of the computers.  Being it will be a nonprofit and will be totally benefited to the school and helping our fellow classmates it should be very easy to collect enough money to get at least some computers installed.  I’m really hoping this comes through and we follow through with that plan and make it a success.  Because not only will it benefit us but it will benefit tons of students that will come later than us for the next couple years.  The better the computer is the longer it last so hopefully once we raise some money we can buy very well made computers that are a little bit more expensive but it will be more worth it in the end.  You only get what you put in so if we pay for cheap computers they’re going to break down and not work and last long.  I have already reached out to the principles about this situation.  Every time somebody reaches out they usually take a couple days to get back to you but it’s understandable because of how busy they are and how much work left to do so I’ll give them about a couple days and hopefully I will hear back from them.  For now just gonna keep my fingers crossed that we get laptops this following week and can start editing.

Filming Blog

During the first two days of filming, i took part in many different clips and scenes.  Both days i wore Nike outfits to be the main person in the commercial.  When I first got to class i had to fill out the filming pass and gather all the filming equipment and write out a plan of what order we were going to film the scenes and what places we want them to be taken at.  Then my group and I all gathered up and headed outside to begin filming which turned out to go very well.  The weather was perfect out and their wasn't too many background sounds and noises being made which helped us be able to make the voice overs without any interruptions.
The first area we went to was the track and field, our first clip was of the bleachers it was a wide shot that also was a pan shot to start off the commercial kind of like an opening scene to have the audience be prepared for what they are about to witness.  I filmed my partner running up the bleachers and made sure to focus on the Nike clothing and shoes.  I feel very happy and confident with the outcome of all the clips i filmed and participated in.  I also ran up the bleachers in my Nike outfit to compare which clip came out better, to have more options to work with to make this commercial is well done as can be. The second scene we filmed was the over the shoulder and first person point of view of me throwing and catching a football.  First i threw the football which is showing the audience how well made the Nike football truly is.  Then i was seen catching a pass and the ball was zoomed in on to emphasize the Nike symbol. We took these shots more than once to make sure if it didn't come out right because of lighting or sound that we would have a good version of this clip.
The next area that we filmed at was the track.  The track was an amazing idea for two reasons, first being that I am filming a sports wear commercial a track and field is the most ideal place to be.  Secondly we were able to get a great wide shot of the bleachers on the outer side of the fence that separates the two areas.  This is where we also filmed a clip of me running the track in my Nike gear and running a route on the football field scoring a touchdown, then i did my celebration dance.  Luckily I was able to get all my filming finished in the first day of filming so on the second day I was able to review all the clips I took and make sure everything was ready to rock and roll when it was time to start editing.  I was very happy overall on how it turned out and cant way to see the finished process.

Storyboard

Throughout the filming and editing parts of creating this film their will be a handful of different angles, movements, shots, and editing tricks to make it a top notch film.  During the filming we will be focusing on taking tracking shots, pan shots, tilt shots, a lot of close ups, medium shots, two shots, and high/low angle shots.  Our commercial is based on tons of movements and physical activities, so it will be necessary to be moving while capturing all of our clips and focusing on primarily the NIKE symbol on all our equipment and props to make it more attractive and eye catching, as the main goal is to sell our product and get it across to as many people as we can.  When working on the editing portion the goal is to make eye catching transitions and tempos to make the audience or viewers wish they had the same accessories we had.  By putting some clips in slow motion it will allow the NIKE football or piece of equipment to be noticed instead of just your ordinary ball and blur.

Editing Blog

Today in class we learned the steps in which how to check out a camera, use the camera, and edit our footage.  To check out a camera the first thing you do is fill out the sheet of paper and than bring it to the teachers desk.  Next you get a camera and the equipment and fill out which number you got for each piece of equipment so that we know who checked out what.  Every student is required to get a filming pass so their will be no extra trouble while trying to film on campus.  The passes will also be labeled in case of emergency like a code red or fire drill so the teacher can keep count of who is where.  Each group of students check out one camera per group/project.
Rule number one when it comes to working with all the camera equipment is to be careful.  All of the pieces and parts are very costly and should be handled with gentleness and care.  The camera and small pieces will be kept in a bag to give it protection and security while walking on campus.  When setting everything up to film you need to start with the Tripod.  The tripod has three fold able legs to keep it a stand and a lever on the very top that attaches the camera.  Once the camera is locked on to the tripod their is a pole that is controlled by a lever that allows the camera to go up and down to take a tilt shot, or side to side to take a pan shot.  Tripods are also used to take still photos that can not be done with the bare hand.  The tripod must be carried with all of its legs and poles fully contracted in.  The SD card that goes in and out of a small slot in the camera is what saves all the film on the camera.
After all the filming has come to an end its than time to begin the editing process.  First off you need to transfer all the clips from the camera onto the desktop.  This is known as dumping (SD to computer).  The film gets imported to the desktop and not directly to the editing software so that it is secured and wont have a chance of getting lost or deleted.  Once the film has been dumped the next step is to import the film into the software and begin editing.  No matter what type of editing occurs there will always be an original copy of the film known as the raw uncut footage.  In the editing software there is three layers. The first one is the titles (which is the t symbol), the second one is the film, and third is the music.  The pause/play symbol is the red triangle.  Once edited the film needs to be exported also known as rendering.

Research: Commercial Conventions and Codes

My group is doing a NIKE commercial. In these commercials, the audience usually sees people taking part in physical activities (running, sports, etc).

  •  They wear costumes such as their tennis shoes, basketball shoes, shorts, tights, sports bras, and loose-fitted shirts.
  •  Props include NIKE footballs, water bottles, jump ropes, basketballs, towels and so on.
  • Their appearance is usually fit, and sweaty, with added glisten to their skin as their doing their activities.
  • The score through the commercials are fast-paced sounds that are meant to make the audience feel motivated and empowered to work out and be active.

  1. Conventions and Codes in NIKE commercials include the symbolic swoosh, added with a "JUST DO IT" slogan. This slogan sparks the media to just go for it, accomplish goals and reach new heights.
  2. In the commercial the props are ALWAYS angled to show the NIKE symbol to let the audience know it is a NIKE commercial- even without stating the name. The symbol has become universal so they know.
  3. The commercial can sometimes include ethos- showing famous athletes, actors and even signers as a way to show that everyone, even the richest, sport NIKE wear.

Introductory

My name is Steven and I am currently a student in high school at FLHS.  I am very passionate about sports, specifically football, which I have been playing since i was a little kid.  My dream job would to be a professional football player or another job in that same field, for example a broadcaster, coach, owner.  I feel like its important to work in a field that you truly enjoy and wont be dreadful to wake up and go to work everyday.

I am a senior and Im taking a majority of AICE classes and AP classes in hopes of trying to knock out a lot of college credits before i even arrive to a university.  It saves a ton of money and gives me the opportunity to graduate early or take less courses which will be less stressful.  Taking these rigorous courses also gives you an advantage in learning what you want to major in and being more knowledgeable on the topic of your choice.

In my off time when im not busy with school or sports I like to hang out with my friends, workout, and play video games.  I usually use this time to rest up my body and prepare it for the following week so I can preform my best in the classroom and field.  I try to give my all into everything I do because if you dont its just wasted time and energy since you wont be getting anything out of it.
